If you’re having fun while exercising, you’re more likely to stick with it and feel better about each workout. Dance is a fun way to target your whole body without feeling like you’re stuck in a boring routine.

Dance is an excellent way to exercise because it provides a solid cardio workout while burning calories and improving both muscular strength and muscle tone. Dance workouts also help you enhance your coordination and improve your flexibility.

To start any dance workout, all you’ll need is some space to move your arms and legs freely. Your Alberta apartment, no matter its size, will provide enough space to dance. Because dance doesn’t require any special equipment, it’s easy to get started. All you’ll need is something to play music or to watch a video on.

While many workouts include lots of jumping and thumping, dance can be quiet making it the perfect choice for renters. However, be mindful of your neighbours and don’t turn your music up too loud or choose to use wireless earbuds instead.

Dance workouts should be anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes depending on your stamina and interest. When starting out, keep your dance workouts to 10 minute sessions and try to get in at least three a week. Once you get accustomed to the routine or feel like your workout is too easy, increase the duration and switch up your music to something high-energy.

There are several different dance workouts to try including:

  • Zumba – a mix of dance and cardio strength-training exercises.
  • Jazzercise – aerobics mixed with dance and strength training.
  • Salsa dancing – constant body movements targeting the core, calves, and hamstrings.
  • Belly dancing – intricate dance movements involving your hips, pelvis, and abs.
  • Hip hop dancing – a vibrant, freestyle dance which increases your stamina and endurance.
  • Ballet – a dance workout that targets core muscles while providing cardio and strength training.

Using dance as a form of exercise not only improves your physical state, but it also boosts your mental health by reducing depression, alleviating stress, and improving your memory and cognitive abilities. Because dance exercises are fun, you’ll enjoy it more and look forward to your next session.
