June 18th is International Picnic Day, a day to embrace outdoor gatherings, open air dining, and an escape from formal meals. So, grab a blanket, fill a basket, and don’t forget a ball or frisbee for on the spot fun.

Here in Edmonton, there are over 20 major parks to explore, and the river valley has a whopping 7,400 hectares of land perfect for enjoying a picnic on a warm summer day. If you’re looking for the perfect picnic spot close to your Edmonton apartment, we’ve got some cozy suggestions for you.

Hawrelak Park

Hawrelak Park is an expansive park with over 160 acres of greenspace for picnics, play, and relaxation. Just seven minutes from our Birchview Apartments, Hawrelak Park has designated picnic areas with pavilions and barbeque pits. Additionally, you’ll find picnic tables sprinkled throughout the park and ample space to spread out a blanket.

Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park

Take the family to the Edmonton Valley Zoo, and then enjoy a picnic at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Park. This 27-acre park, just a few minutes from our Colonial Arms Apartments, has numerous picnic sites available or there’s plenty of space to spread out a blanket on the grass. You’ll also find two natural playgrounds for the kids and a boat launch to get out and enjoy the North Saskatchewan River.

Alberta Legislature Grounds

Residents of our DEKS on 6th can walk to the Alberta Legislature Grounds for a picnic amongst the manicured flower gardens. The kids will love splashing around in the fountain and you can stroll through the Borealis Gallery and Pehonan Theatre at your leisure or book a tour of the Legislature building for an educationally fun outing

Terwillegar Park

Terwillegar Park, just minutes from our Whitemud Creek Classic Condominiums, is a large open greenspace along the North Saskatchewan River with numerous trails and walkways to explore. Fill a picnic basket and bring a blanket to spread out in the shady areas of the park. This park also has a small beach for hot summer days. The beach is pet friendly and the perfect place to cool down after a long walk. Make sure to check the water quality before swimming
