Moving into a new apartment can be an exciting time– a start of a new chapter. But between packing boxes, changing addresses, and organizing utilities, it’s easy for important details to fall through the cracks. Having a detailed move-in checklist can make the transition much smoother. We’ve created a guide to help keep your move on track and ensure a smooth transition into your new home.

Before You Move In

Review Your Lease Agreement Carefully

Before signing, take the time to read through your lease in full. Make sure you understand key details like monthly rent amount, payment due dates, included utilities, pet policies, and any rules regarding maintenance or subletting. If you have questions, ask your property manager before move-in day. It’s much easier to clarify upfront than find out later on.

Set Up Your Utilities and Services

Depending on your building, you may be responsible for setting up utilities such as gas, water, hydro, and internet. Call the service providers ahead of time to ensure everything is up and running on move-in day. Some services require scheduling installations or deposits, so don’t wait until the last minute.

Schedule Your Move

If you’re hiring movers, confirm your booking and ask about any building restrictions, like elevator reservations or loading dock access. If you’re moving yourself, recruit a few helping hands and make sure your vehicle fits in the loading zone.

On Move-In Day

Inspect Your Apartment Thoroughly

Before unpacking, do a detailed walkthrough of your new home. Check for any existing damage, like scratches on floors, marks on walls, leaky faucets, or appliances that don’t work. Take photos or videos for your records and submit a move-in inspection form to your property manager. This documentation also protects you when it’s time to move out.

Locate Key Features

Take a few minutes to find the essentials: your water shut-off valve, smoke detectors, thermostat, etc. Knowing where these are can save time (and stress) in an emergency.

Test Everything

Turn on all faucets, lights, and appliances to confirm they’re in working order. Check doors and windows to ensure they lock properly. It’s better to flag any maintenance needs right away rather than discover them weeks later.

After You Settle In

Update Your Address

Notify Canada Post, your bank, employer, and any subscription services of your new address. This ensures important mail and packages reach you without delay.

Review Building Rules and Contact Info

Every property has its own community standards, from quiet hours to waste disposal procedures. Familiarize yourself with these guidelines and save your property manager’s contact information in case you need assistance.

Get Renters’ Insurance

Even if your landlord has building insurance, it won’t cover your personal belongings. Renters’ insurance provides peace of mind by protecting you in case of theft, fire, or water damage.

Make It Feel Like Home

Once the essentials are in order, take the time to decorate and personalize your space. Add a few plants, hang your favourite photos, or set up a cozy reading corner. Small touches make a big difference in feeling settled.
